According to the information compiled by AA reporters from the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) data, the amount of transactions made with debit and credit cards across Turkey amounted to 10 trillion 627.3 billion lira in the January-September period of 2024.
When the sectoral distribution of payments made with debit and credit cards is examined, the highest expenditure was made in the supermarkets and shopping malls category with 1 trillion 863.2 billion.
The miscellaneous food category ranked second with 742.4 billion lira, followed by clothing and accessories with 739.9 billion lira.
During the said period, 710.5 billion lira payments were made in the electricity and electronic goods category and 695.4 billion lira in the service sectors category by debit and credit cards.
During this period, 663.9 billion liras were paid at gas and fuel stations with debit and credit cards, while food expenses were 629.7 billion liras and other payments were 555.2 billion liras.
In the January-September period, insurance payments were 506.1 billion liras, public/tax payments were 462.6 billion liras, and vehicle rental-sales, service and spare parts payments were 431.6 billion liras.
– 307.1 billion liras were paid for education, stationery and office supplies
In the same period, 409.9 billion liras were paid for building materials, hardware and hardware, while 375.3 billion liras were paid for health, health products and cosmetics, 307.1 billion liras for education, stationery and office supplies, and 297.3 billion liras for furniture decoration.
In addition, 246.1 billion lira in travel agencies and transportation, 235 billion lira in airline transactions, and 151 billion lira in contractor works were paid by debit and credit card.
Spending amounts made by debit card and credit card: jewelery 174.6 billion, accommodation payments 173.7 billion, telecommunication payments 105.4 billion, private pension payments 51.3 billion, car rental payments 37 billion, club, association and social services payments 34.6 billion and direct marketing payments were listed as 15.8 billion lira.

During this period, 3 trillion 91 billion lira of the purchases made with debit and credit cards were made over the internet.
The share of online expenditures in total was calculated as 29 percent.
In the 9 months of the year, purchases made by letter and telephone amounted to 504.5 billion liras, and customs duty payments amounted to 13.4 billion liras.
