According to the information reflected in US and UK-based defense publications, the Polish army and Border Guards have started to carry out surveillance on the Belarusian border with the artificial intelligence system called Inteligentna Granica – Smart Border. The system, developed jointly by the Artificial Intelligence Application Center within Poland’s Cyberspace Defense Forces and the Border Guard, is currently being tested on a tens of kilometers section of the Belarusian border. The project is carried out within the scope of Operation Bezpieczne Podlasie – Safe Podlasie, in which the Polish army supports border security.

Poland’s “Smart Border” system analyzes camera, drone and sensor data on the Belarusian border with artificial intelligence. Robotic and autonomous systems are also tested in the same region. (WP-Poland)

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MONITORS CAMERAS AND DRONES

In the new system, instead of soldiers constantly monitoring dozens of camera images, information from cameras, drones and other surveillance sensors is combined in the same operational table by artificial intelligence. The software recognizes objects, evaluates their movements and notifies operators of events that may require intervention. At the military center of the system is the AIRON TACTIC platform developed by the Polish Cyberspace Defense Forces. The information produced by artificial intelligence can then be transferred to the TAK and JASMIN tactical command systems used by Polish soldiers and border troops. Thus, the aim is to shorten the time it takes for the movement detected by a camera or drone to be delivered to the command network of the troops in the field.

ROBOTIC AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS AT THE LIMIT

The Polish Operational Command stated that the trials are not limited to artificial intelligence; He explained that robotic and autonomous systems were also tested in the same border region. However, which robots were used, how many systems were sent to the field and where exactly the trials were carried out are not disclosed for security reasons. According to Polish authorities, artificial intelligence is not given the authority to make independent decisions at the border. The task of the system is to filter the huge flow of images and data in front of human operators and direct their attention to possible threats. The Polish government also announced that the first anti-drone system, established with a large investment on the Belarusian border in March 2026, became operational.

BELARUS BORDER HAS TURNED INTO A CASTLE

The artificial intelligence system forms the last link of the border line that Warsaw has increasingly militarized since 2021. Poland accuses the Belarusian government of applying “hybrid pressure” by diverting migrants to the border; Minsk rejects these accusations. Operation Safe Podlasie was launched on August 1, 2024, and more than 10 thousand soldiers took part in one of the last rotations, while approximately 5 thousand soldiers supported the Border Guard on the Belarusian border every day. According to data from the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, the government has allocated approximately 3 billion zlotys to border security in the last two years; In addition to the 190-kilometer physical barrier, an electronic surveillance system of approximately 220 kilometers was created along the rivers. Artificial intelligence, anti-drone systems and autonomous robots are now added to the soldiers, steel barriers and thermal cameras on NATO’s eastern border.
