The US government becomes a shareholder in a startup that specializes in the processing of rare earths. The government will team up with private investors who will contribute $550 million to the company’s capital, North Carolina-based Vulcan Elements announced on Monday (local time). The government will grant the company a loan of 620 million dollars and a grant of 50 million dollars and in return it will receive Vulcan Elements shares worth 50 million.

“We are fully focused on bringing the production of critical minerals and rare earths back to our country to ensure that the US supply chain is strong, safe and completely reliable,” US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is quoted as saying in the startup’s statement. Rare earth metals are essential for a whole range of technologies, from electric cars to fighter jets. The USA wants to become independent of China – Beijing controls production and, above all, the processing of raw materials.

Ahead of today’s New York mayoral election, the survey results speak for themselves.
