In Maine, an ICE officer killed a Colombian father during a deportation operation. The authorities admitted: He was not the person they were looking for.

A US immigration officer, ICE, shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man in Maine. According to current findings, the man was apparently not the actual target of the operation. The incident triggers in the USA political debates about the authority’s actions.

Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday morning (local time). According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), emergency services monitored the last known address of a migrant who had a legally binding deportation order.

However, according to US media, Durán Guerrero was not the person the officials were looking for. This was confirmed by several officials familiar with the operation, including to CBS News. ICE also admitted that the Colombian was not the target of the operation.

According to the DHS, the officers approached Durán Guerrero as he was getting into his car. He then tried to escape in the car. An ICE officer used his firearm out of concern for public safety.

Video recordings from surveillance cameras document parts of the operation. Several shots can then be heard. A little later you can see the car slowly rolling through an intersection and finally being stopped by emergency vehicles. Officers then pull the seriously injured man out of the car. He died at the scene – in front of his wife and three-year-old daughter.

The exact sequence of events immediately before the shooting is still unclear. According to several US media outlets, the ICE officers involved were not wearing body cameras.

The use of firearms is now being investigated by the FBI and the relevant authorities in the state of Maine. According to the mayor of Biddeford, the local police were not informed in advance about the ICE operation.

US media report that Durán Guerrero has lived in the United States since 2023. He therefore had a work permit and, according to those close to him, was undergoing an asylum procedure. The DHS said he entered the United States via the southern border in 2023.
