Chanson performance at the state banquet: Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sits behind the drums and French President Emmanuel Macron takes the microphone.

France’s President presented himself as a singer during a visit to Armenia – accompanied by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the drums. At a state banquet they performed the French song “La Bohème” by Charles Aznavour, as a video distributed by a French journalist shows. Armenia’s President Vahagn Khachaturian later joined the performance, strumming the grand piano one-handed alongside a pianist.

The state banquet in the capital Yerevan took place after a meeting with almost 40 heads of state and government from Europe. The Caucasus republic hosted a European Political Community summit on Monday. At an informal dinner the evening before, Pashinyan had already surprised the top politicians with a performance by his band – with him on the drums.

Aznavour was one of the biggest French chanson stars. He was born in Paris in 1924 as the son of Armenian immigrants and maintained a close relationship with the Caucasus country. In his career spanning more than 70 years, he composed over 1,300 songs and sold more than 180 million records worldwide. Aznavour died in 2018 at the age of 94.
