Donald Trump has arrived in South Korea. All eyes are on Trump and Xi’s meeting on Thursday. All news in the news blog.
US President Donald Trump has arrived in South Korea as part of his trip to Asia, where he will attend the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. A meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is planned for Wednesday, before talks with China’s head of state Xi Jinping on Thursday. South Korea is the third stop on Trump’s Asia trip; the US President previously visited Japan and Malaysia.
The planned meeting between Xi and Trump on the sidelines of the APEC summit is their first face-to-face meeting since Trump returned to the White House.
US President Donald Trump brought up a possible tariff reduction before a meeting with China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping. The Republican, when asked by reporters whether he would be willing to lower tariffs on goods from China that were imposed as a bargaining chip in the fight against the fentanyl crisis, said: “I expect we will lower them.” However, Trump did not give a timetable or provide any further details.
Trump said he assumed China would help solve the fentanyl problem. The Wall Street Journal previously reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that China could commit to stricter export controls on chemicals used to make the drug fentanyl.
In the past, Trump has repeatedly accused China of being partly responsible for the fentanyl crisis in the USA. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is quickly addictive. Fentanyl is up to 50 times more powerful than heroin. According to US information, just a few milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal.
US President Donald Trump sees himself prevented from running for a third term by the US Constitution. “If you read it, it’s pretty clear – I’m not allowed to run. That’s a shame,” Trump told reporters Wednesday aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea.
Since his re-election in November, Trump has repeatedly toyed publicly with the idea of running again. However, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits being elected president more than twice.
The administration of US President Donald Trump is not allowed to fire government employees during the ongoing budget freeze in the US. California federal judge Susan Illston issued a preliminary injunction on Tuesday (local time) temporarily prohibiting the government from further layoffs as a result of the shutdown. The order is valid until a decision is made in the main proceedings, according to a court document.
