Japan is preparing to start negotiations with face -to -face customs duties with the US today.

Ryosei Akazawa, Tokyo’s Chief Trade Negotiator, will meet with US Treasury Minister Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer today, and will hold large -scale talks including energy projects and exchange rates.

Bessent said that more than 75 countries have requested negotiations so far, “the first step of the countries that will get an advantage,” he said. But Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stressed that Tokyo would not rush to reach an agreement and would not make great concessions.

Japan’s exports to the United States have been influenced by additional customs duties up to 24 percent. Although most of these taxes have been suspended for 90 days, an additional 25 percent tax on base customs duties and cars continues to remain in force. The automotive sector is one of the most important sectors of Japan’s export -based economy.

Ishiba said they didn’t think of taking any retaliation measures for now.
