The clear sky offered by winter nights in Bitlis was the scene of a beautiful astrophotography study.

Assoc. Prof., a nature and sky observer, BEÜ Faculty of Health Sciences Faculty Member and Anatolian Underwater Research and Sports Association Bitlis Representative. Dr. Cihan Önen imaged the Orion Nebula using a telephoto lens, professional telescope and various astronomy equipment, on the hill in Bitlis countryside, where the air temperature dropped to 4 degrees below zero.

‘IT IS WORTH THE TIREDNESS’

Shooting of the Orion Nebula, which can be seen with the naked eye at night despite being approximately 1270 light years away from Earth, took approximately 4 hours.

Assoc. Dr. Önen stated that Bitlis’s high altitude and low light pollution are advantageous for space observations and said, “This situation offers us many opportunities. It is difficult to wait for hours in the freezing cold, but the resulting images are worth all the fatigue. During the winter months, the Orion Nebula is in a much more ideal location for photographing.”
