They have their children’s pictures on their cell phones or their names written on pieces of paper. Parents are desperately searching for their missing children. Great sadness alongside joy and relief. On the one hand, the newly won freedom in Syria is celebrated, but on the other hand, there is horror at what remains of Assad’s terror regime: a torture prison next to a 5-star hotel, mass graves in open fields.
Photo reporter and Syria expert Lutz Jäkel was there and reported on hope, skepticism and the immeasurable suffering that the people endured. In the Saidnaya torture prison he makes horrifying discoveries. How does a country live after decades of oppression? How are the Syrians coping with their new everyday life? And what chances are there for peace with the Islamist interim government?
