Iran’s nuclear facilities could be attacked by Israel. Tehran warns the USA. Diplomats continue to focus on negotiations in the conflict.

Shortly before the fifth round of nuclear talks between the USA and Iran, the leadership in Tehran announced that it is responsible for the United States in the event of attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. “In the event of an attack on the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the Zionist regime, the US government will have a legal responsibility,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi wrote in a letter to UN General Secretary António Guterres, which was published on Thursday.

The fifth round of the US Iranian nuclear negotiations will take place on Friday with the mediation of the Gulf State of Oman in Rome. In mid -April, the United States and Iran had discussed the talks about a possible new agreement.

Western states have been accusing Iran for years to strive for the construction of nuclear weapons what Tehran denies. Iran now enriches uranium up to a degree of 60 percent – which is many times over the limit of 3.67 percent agreed in 2015. Uranium is required to produce nuclear weapons to 90 percent.

While Tehran has repeatedly explained that the enrichment of uranium was not negotiable for Iran, the US specialist Steve Witkoff described this as a “red line”. The United States “could not even allow one percent of enrichment,” said Witkoff. Foreign Minister Araghtschi, who heads the Iranian delegation in the talks, said in online service X, “Enrichment in Iran will continue, whether with or without an agreement.”

In 2015, Iran signed an international agreement that provided for the relaxation of sanctions in return for a restriction of the Iranian nuclear program. However, US President Donald Trump unilaterally terminated this during his first term (2017-21) and again had punitive measures against the country. In his part, Tehran gradually terminated his obligations from the agreement.
