Unusual support: Hollywood’s “white guys” support Kamala Harris in the US election campaign.
“Just a few guys supporting Kamala”: In a remarkable twist in the US election campaign, prominent Hollywood figures have shown their support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. An online event organized by ‘White Dudes for Harris’ raised over four million US dollars in donations for her campaign.
The three-hour event on Monday attracted around 190,000 participants, including well-known names such as Jeff Bridges, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Ruffalo and Mark Hamill as well as numerous Democratic politicians.
Jeff Bridges, famous from the movie “The Big Lebowski,” expressed his enthusiasm for Harris’ campaign right at the start of the event. “I’m white, I’m the Dude, and I’m for Harris,” he explained his attendance at the event. He praised President Joe Biden for passing the baton to Harris and added: “I can see her becoming president. A female president, man! How exciting!”
Singer Josh Groban also stressed the importance of political engagement, especially for privileged parts of society: ‘It’s so much easier not to be politically vocal when the world was built for you.’ He warned that it’s easy to believe that someone else will make the first move.
A contribution by Star Wars actor Mark Hamill was also particularly noteworthy: With his famous phrase “I am Luke Skywalker. I am here to save you,” he secured a donation of $50,000.
“The virtual gathering shattered expectations,” the organizers said in a statement. They said: “Speakers spoke honestly and openly about the path forward, the importance of connecting with one another, and the important role we can play in getting other white men to turn away from the dangerous, dark path Donald Trump wants us to march down.”
Several speakers during the event emphasized that white men would benefit from standing up for the rights of others. In particular, they addressed the issue of abortion rights, a key election issue in the United States.
In addition to the “White Dudes,” there are also numerous similar initiatives that support Kamala Harris. For example, more than 40,000 people responded to a call from “Black Women for Harris.” The “White Women for Harris” also collected more than eleven million US dollars for the Democrat in a video call with over 200,000 participants.
The “White Dudes” X account already has over 85,000 subscribers, despite the fact that it was briefly blocked by Elon Musk’s social media platform. For a time, the account could not be found and could no longer post, but is now available again on X.
