Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to carry out nuclear weapons tests again. The Republican said in a video message on his Truth Social platform: “This process will begin immediately.” As a justification, Trump again stated that other countries had testing programs and would therefore be tested on the same basis.

The US President made exactly the same statement a week ago, causing a stir around the world, especially since there has been a moratorium on testing nuclear weapons for decades. The USA carried out its last test in 1992.

On Wednesday it became known that Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed his government to examine the advisability of possible nuclear weapons tests. At a meeting of the Security Council, Putin commissioned the ministries of defense and foreign affairs, the secret services, but also the civilian ministries to collect information for this purpose. This emerged from the Kremlin minutes of the meeting. The information should lead to suggestions for possible preparations for nuclear weapons tests, Putin said.

The Israeli minister responsible for diaspora issues and the fight against anti-Semitism, Amichai Chikli, has called on Jewish New Yorkers to emigrate to Israel following the election victory of the left-wing Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. “The city that once stood as a symbol of global freedom has handed over its keys to a Hamas supporter,” Chikli wrote on the online service X on Wednesday. “I invite the Jews of New York to seriously consider building a new home for themselves in Israel.” Around 1.3 million Jews live in New York – the largest Jewish community outside of Israel. After Mamdani’s election, the city “will never be the same, especially not for its Jewish community,” Chikli explained.

Mamdani won the mayoral election in New York on Tuesday. The 34-year-old “democratic socialist” clearly prevailed against the Trump-supported candidate Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani belongs to the left wing of the Democratic Party. He is the first Muslim to hold the office.

Shortly before the election, after sharp criticism, Mamdani demonstratively acknowledged Israel’s right to exist, but his controversial statements about Israel offended many New York Jews. Mamdani accuses Israel of committing “genocide” against the Palestinians in its actions in the Gaza Strip. However, he did not comment on the Islamist Hamas, which triggered the Gaza war with its attack on Israel.
