In the United States, cases of detention and deportation of travelers, including Germans, are increasing. That shouldn’t be a coincidence.

A number of arrests when entering the United States unsettled holidaymakers and foreigners living in America. It is about several cases, including German citizens, in which people were denied the entry despite complete papers. In some cases, those affected were recorded in deportation institutions for days or weeks.

The accumulation of cases suggests that they are related to a strict line of the border officials in the course of the migration policy of US President Donald Trump. Trump had promised significantly stronger border protection and more deportations in the election campaign. On his first day, he signed a decree, according to foreigners – be they in the country or when entering – as largely as possible.

Measured by the number of entry into the United States, the cases are still a small fraction. Nevertheless, the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin supplemented the travel instruction for the country. “Preventive in the United States, false information on the purpose of the stay or a minor exceeding of the length of stay when traveling can lead to arrest, deportation and deportation,” says the website of the ministry since this week.

The ministry also emphasized that so-called ESTA permits for visa-free trips and a US visa do not entitle you to enter the USA. In fact, travelers recently reported significantly percher surveys at airports and border crossings. Language barriers can also charge the conversations.

There are three cases of Germans who were last taken into deportation when entering the United States. Two of them were tourists. According to media reports, a woman is said to have been accused of wanting to work illegally in the United States. A man therefore misunderstood a question from the border official and therefore incorrectly stated to live in Las Vegas. Both were held in US home for several weeks and are now back in Germany.

In a third case, it is about a German living in the USA who, according to relatives in Boston, was arrested and has now been in a prison for about two weeks. According to his mother, the 34-year-old has lived in the USA since 2007 and has an unlimited residence permit with the so-called GreenCard. He accuses the authorities of being treated poorly. Among other things, he was shouted at the airport at the survey and had to move out. The allegations could not be verified independently.

Rascha Alawieh, a Lebanese doctor and kidney expert from Brown University in Rhode Island on the US East coast, was denied and deported immediately despite the valid visa. According to the authorities, there were references to sympathy for the Lebanese Hisbollah militia on their cell phone. The deportation was carried out despite a judicial stop and called criticism.

But it also hit immigrants with a valid residence status. A case, which is particularly prominent in the United States, is Machmud Chalil, a GreenCard holder with Palestinian roots and graduate of the New York Elite University Columbia. Chalil was a prominent player in propalestinian demonstrations on the university campus last year. The US authorities arrested him in Manhattan for alleged support from Islamist Hamas and want to deport him. The legal dispute continues.

The “New York Times” describes similar cases in an article. According to the sheet, those affected or their representatives state that they are targeted because of their statements and not because they violate laws. The US government, in turn, explains that the arrests are about the protection of the Americans.

Another case is a French scientist who was denied entry into the USA. According to French media reports, US border officials found private news on his mobile phone on his mobile phone in which he criticized the Trump government’s research policy. These statements were given as the reason for the refusal to enter.
