The United States is entitled to Greenland’s resources. But the aggressive attitude Washington now has the opposite consequences.

During a visit to Brussels, the Greenland Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt expressed the wish to work more closely with Europe in the future. In doing so, she reacted to the aggressive attitude of the United States, which under President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed the largest island in the world.

“Of course we want to work with our friendly countries in our valuable minerals,” Motzfeldt told the magazine “Politico”. They want to support the partner countries with the minerals with change for sustainable energy production.

The EU has long been interested in the resources of Greenland. The first contracts worth 94 million euros already exist. Over a year ago, the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen opened an office in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. In this way, the European presence in the region is to be strengthened.

Motzfeldt also commented on alleged espionage activities of the United States in an interview with “Politico”. The “Wall Street Journal” reported on Tuesday that the US intelligence services had been given the instructions to explain the independence movement in Greenland and in particular its positions to reduce raw materials by the United States. “We should be friends. We are allies. Allies do not do something like that,” said Motzfeldt.

Greenland belongs to the former colonial power of Denmark, but is largely autonomous. The United States also justified its interest with the strategically important situation in Greenland.
