Big collared shirts, flared trousers, polka dot dresses, plaid padded jackets. In recent years, interest in vintage clothing has been quite high. The capital of this clothing style, which means reusing used but well-preserved clothes, is Istanbul Kadıköy. Almost One in 10 shops sells vintage clothing or includes vintage details in its space. It is necessary to pay attention to the preservation of such products, which are often confused with retro clothing that looks old but is new. At the same time, the most important detail that attracts young people to this style of clothing is their uniqueness. There is one of each product, so much so that their motto is “One for everything, if it doesn’t fit you, you are not the real owner.”

4 ITEMS 800 TL

Products sold at prices ranging from 200 TL to a thousand TL are mostly preferred by students. A student named Hasret, who uses products that are both stylish and affordable, said, “There are times when I combine it with the products in my grandmother’s closet. “I can buy 4 pieces of winter products for 800 liras.” he said. Another student, Egemen, said that he asked for the jacket his friends were wearing, but he said he only had one.

Polat added that the products in the shop are from 1980 to 2000 and that the products should be passed down from generation to generation, not disposable.

EACH PRODUCT 1

Yasin Polat, who runs a vintage clothing store in Kadıköy, stated that citizens often confuse vintage and retro clothing and said, “These products are not produced, they do not have sizes, one of them. Vintage is the use of old products in order not to harm the nature, while retro harms the environment again with old but new products.” “It gives,” he said.

IMPOSED FASHION

Explaining that old clothes are produced with better quality and are healthier because less chemicals are used, Polat thinks that today’s consumption craze harms both the pocket and the climate. “There is an imposed perception of fashion” Polat continued his explanations as follows: “Everyone suddenly wears the same model of product as if it was given away for free. These products are unique, so the person feels more special.”

CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION DETAIL

Explaining why it is so loved in Kadıköy, which is the capital of vintage fashion, Polat said, “Beyoğlu could also be in Beşiktaş, but those regions have changed a lot in terms of cultural transformation in the last 10 years. Kadıköy is more suitable in this sense. Vintage places have also started to increase.” .

Ali Yiğit, who runs a vintage clothing store in Kadıköy, stated that this culture is more common in Europe and said, “There are more special pieces there.” Yiğit explained that their slogan is to go back to the past in terms of fashion and quality. “Over time, tight clothing has gone back to the 90s. High school students buy it to look for style, while middle-aged people buy it to go back to the past,” he said.

Pointing out that the oldest product they have is a t-shirt from 1991, but it has not been deformed for years, Yiğit said, “Our products come from abroad. Additional expenses are added. Our prices are half the price compared to chain stores.”
