The EU and Great Britain agree on a new agreement five years after Brexit. The focus is on defense and security.
Five years after the Brexit, Great Britain and the European Union move together again. At the beginning of a summit in London, the representatives of the 27 EU member states approved plans for in-depth cooperation in areas such as defense, security, food standards, fishing and energy. This was reported by the German Press Agency, citing diplomats and EU officials.
The summit in London, in which EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa want to seal the deal with the Great Britain Premier Keir Stronger, is the first since Brexit in 2020 and is considered an important milestone in the relationship between the two sides.
In view of the Russian War against Ukraine and Trump’s eratical security policy, the EU and Great Britain are now striving for a significantly closer cooperation in defense issues. In addition, hurdles in the food trade should also be dismantled in the future. Both sides also plan closer cooperation in the coming years when accessing fishing areas – a topic that is particularly sensitive to Great Britain.
It is of great importance for Great Britain that British companies have access to EU-funded armaments projects. Among other things, it is about the financial instrument “Safe”, which is intended to provide loans of a total of 150 billion euros – for example for the development of air defense systems and artillery.
Although the project at the EU level has not yet been finally decided, negotiations are already well advanced, according to diplomatic circles. The planned security partnership now creates the basis for the fact that British companies can be involved in these projects in the future.
In addition, the EU and Great Britain want to cooperate closerly in the protection of critical infrastructure. So there have been repeated damage to Untersekabeln. More intensive cooperation is also planned in the area of space security, as is an increased exchange of data on irregular migration.
