Social media users in Turkey are having difficulty accessing Instagram as of August 2, 2024. Access to Instagram was blocked by BTK on August 2. The first statement from BTK said, “The catalogue was closed on the grounds that it did not comply with the crimes.”
Catalogue crimes include content that is difficult to remove, such as child sexual abuse, incitement to suicide, and insulting Atatürk.
It is stated that no time period has been set for the lifting of this sanction and that it depends on Instagram’s attitude.
The access ban affected a wide range of users across the country. Many users reported on social media and messaging apps that they were unable to access the platform. This situation has caused concern, especially among those who communicate, conduct business or produce content on social media.
Similar blocks have been imposed on social media platforms in Turkey before. However, there is no definitive information about why this time the access ban was imposed.
While users are trying to access Instagram via VPN and other alternative means, there is still uncertainty about how long the block will last and when it will be lifted.
