During his first term, Trump fired the FBI boss in connection with investigations into Russian influence on the US elections. Now Trump is back at the power – and Comey is charged.

After massive pressure from US President Donald Trump on the judiciary, a jury has accused the former FBI director James Comey for false statements. The Ministry of Justice announced that the 64-year-old was also accused of hindering an investigation of the congress.

In Trump’s first term of office, Comey had investigated Russian influence on the US elections in 2016 and examined possible connections between Moscow and members from Trump’s campaign team. In 2017, Comey was released by Trump in connection with the ongoing investigations at the time.

The indictment follows only a few days after Trump had emphasized his Minister of Justice Pam Bondi on social media to proceed against people he regarded as an enemy. The president complained that a lot of talk but nothing was done – and explicitly called Comey.

Bondi now wrote on the X platform that nobody was above the law. Today’s indictment reflects the determination of the Ministry of Justice to hold those to “use their position of power to deceive the American people”.

Trump made no secret of his joy about the indictment – the Republican wrote on his mouthpiece Truth Truth: “Justice in America!” He described Comey as corrupt and “one of the worst people to whom this country was ever exposed”.

US presidents traditionally attach great importance not to raise no doubt about the independence of the judiciary. Trump has already broken with many customs. Critics accuse him of influencing the judiciary and law enforcement authorities with his power as President and instrumentalizing for political purposes.
