Emails and text messages recently released by a committee of the US House of Representatives revealed close personal exchanges between Summers and Epstein. The Harvard newspaper “Crimson” reported on the exchange, which ended shortly before Epstein’s arrest in the summer of 2019, and in which Summers also made derogatory comments about women. Summers has now said he takes “full responsibility” for his “misguided decision to remain in contact with Mr. Epstein.” He wants to continue fulfilling his teaching duties at Harvard, but wants to withdraw from public tasks in order to regain trust and repair relationships with people around him.

After six months in office, the head of the US disaster protection agency FEMA has resigned, as several US media reports. According to the Washington Post, David Richardson submitted his resignation on Monday. The former Navy officer took over the post on an interim basis in May after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fired his predecessor. FEMA boss Cameron Hamilton had publicly contradicted the minister’s goal of abolishing the agency.

The US media does not give a specific reason for David Richardson’s resignation. According to the Washington Post, he is said to have led FEMA only half-heartedly. Officials have repeatedly complained in recent months that Richardson does not take part in internal conferences and is difficult to reach, it is said. Even during the flood disaster in Texas at the beginning of July with more than 100 deaths, Richardson was initially unable to be reached. Most recently, Secretary of Homeland Security Noem Richardson prohibited speaking to the press.
