5.16 am: The Democratic candidate for Vice President, Tim Walz, thanked Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party for their trust in him and accepted his nomination. “It is an honor,” he said. Walz recalled his time as a teacher and football coach. His students inspired him to go into politics. He was a simple teacher and encountered skepticism. “But never underestimate a public school teacher,” he shouted to the cheers of the crowd. He had learned a lot, including how to make compromises without ignoring his own values. He warned against a Republican victory. “They will ban abortion,” Walz said.
4.30 am: TV star Oprah Winfrey has spoken out in favor of Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States. She was impressed by the mood at the Democratic Party Convention. “We can’t wait to get out of here and do something. And what we’re doing is electing Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States,” she said. She felt honored to speak to the delegates about an important topic: freedom. The moderator showed herself ready for battle. “If we stand together, it’s impossible to beat us.” Winfrey described America as an “ongoing project” that requires “openness to the hard work and heartfelt labor of democracy.”
This election is not about “them and us, but about you and me.” She is a registered voter herself, independent, but going to vote. “I have always voted for my values.” She called on all independent and undecided voters “values and character matter most.” “Let us be loyal to the Constitution and not to a person,” she added.
In her speech, she lashed out at Trump’s running mate JD Vance. “When a house is burning, we don’t ask the ethnicity or religion of the homeowner. We don’t ask who their partner is or how they voted. No, we just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the house happens to belong to a childless female cat, then we try to rescue that cat, too,” Winfrey said.
Her remarks refer to a 2021 interview on Fox News in which Vance, then a candidate for the Ohio Senate, told Tucker Carlson that the United States is run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy about their own lives and the choices they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country unhappy, too.”
3.55 am: At the party convention in Chicago, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called the administration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the most successful in modern history. She has known Harris for a long time. Pelosi, who is still considered an influential figure among the Democrats, recalled the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. “Let us not forget who attacked democracy back then. And let us not forget who saved it: it was us,” she recalled one of the darkest chapters in recent US history. It was a paralyzing moment, she said.
3.20 am: Former US President Bill Clinton was happy about the mood at the Democratic Party Convention. “I think Hillary gave a great speech,” he said. She received long applause for her speech on the first day of the convention. Clinton thanked Joe Biden “for his courage and his sacrifice.” The 78-year-old pointed out that he is the oldest member of his family in four generations. “And I’m still younger than Donald Trump.”
