The big discount period, which started with the name “Legendary Friday, Magnificent Friday, Magnificent November”, spurred fraudsters into action. The discounted shopping period, which will start with Singles’ Day on November 11, will continue with Black Friday on November 29, but experts underline that one should be very careful, especially with credit card brokers, during this period. One of the most common methods used by fraudsters during the discount period is to create fake websites. These sites, which generally imitate the names of popular brands or large e-commerce sites, attract attention with their realistic images. While users try to shop quickly in order not to miss out on big discounts and campaigns that seem attractive, they unknowingly enter their credit card or personal information into these fake sites and fall into the trap.

While brokers obtain personal information through fake online shopping sites and social media, they can take out loans and even establish companies in the name of victimized citizens.

BEWARE OF THIS TRAP!

Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık (Digital Communication Researcher)

“Cyber fraudsters try to lure users into a trap by sending messages with titles such as ‘limited time discount’ or ‘special offer only for you’. If the link in these messages is clicked, users are directed to a fake website. During this period, cyber fraudsters create fake sites that imitate the names of popular brands and large e-commerce sites. In particular, the site’s address bar should contain the phrase “https://” and the browser should be checked to provide a secure connection with a security icon (lock sign).

Card limit warning

“Limited virtual credit cards offer an additional layer of security against fraud. These cards keep users’ spending limits low, thus limiting the amount that will be damaged in case of possible fraud. “Even if card information is compromised in a fraud attempt, it poses less risk of harm than high-limit cards.”

Forensic Information Specialist Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık also stated that there are some precautions that need to be taken for a secure mobile banking experience, and warned about strong passwords, saying: “Passwords should be complex and contain letters, numbers and special characters. Users should change their passwords frequently and create combinations that cannot be easily guessed.” It’s also important to use two-step verification.”

THE SELLER IS ALSO A VICTIM

Cenk Çiğdemli (TOBB E-commerce Council Member)

“It should not be forgotten that not only consumers, but also site owners and sellers may be victims of fraud during discount periods. The seller’s site must use 3D Secure, which is based on SMS confirmation for purchases made by credit card. This system is intended to protect the seller as well as the consumer. Some fraudsters can make purchases with stolen credit cards. When the real owner of the card objects to the purchase, the seller has to pay the money back to the bank. “There are many companies that are victimized in this way.”
