2.30 am: Donald Trump has launched a series of $100 commemorative coins. They join other products designed to raise money for the campaign, including Trump sneakers, Trump Bibles, Trump playing cards, Trump NFTs (digital images) and stripes from the suit he was wearing when he was arrested in Georgia last year.
The latest addition to the Trumpian entrepreneurial universe features a profile of the former president’s face and an image of the White House with the words “In God we Trust.” The “1oz .999% silver medallions” will be available starting Wednesday. Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday that the coins are “the ONLY OFFICIAL coin designed by me and proudly minted here in the USA.”
1.01 am: In the USA, a budget freeze has apparently been averted until after the presidential election. On behalf of both chambers of Congress, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, and the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, announced on Sunday (local time) in Washington the bipartisan agreement that will ensure the funding of US federal agencies until December 20.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the agreement this week. Until now, a shutdown was threatened before the presidential election on November 5, as funding for state institutions under federal responsibility is currently only guaranteed until the end of September. Donald Trump had demanded that Republicans only avert a shutdown if an election law he called for was passed. This requires voters to prove their citizenship.
18:38: Former US President Donald Trump does not want to run again in the 2028 presidential election if he loses the election in November. In this case, he cannot imagine running again, said the 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate in an interview with the television production “Full Measure”.
10.28 am: US entrepreneur and Trump supporter Mike Lindell has caused a stir online with an advertisement for his pillows. Lindell, founder of the company My Pillow, announced on social networks on Saturday that a pillow would be reduced to the price of 14.88 dollars (equivalent to around 13.30 euros). The numbers 14 and 88 are often used in right-wing extremist circles. Read more about it here.
2.30 am: There is resistance among Republicans to a plan by US presidential candidate Donald Trump to combine an election law with a bridging budget. While Trump is willing to accept a budget freeze, members of Congress fear that this could damage the party. Trump wants to push through a law that requires voters to prove their citizenship. Read more about the resistance to Trump’s plan here.
0.05 am: Vice President Kamala Harris has received support from the opposing camp. Dawn Roberts, campaign manager for former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, has spoken out in her favor. In an opinion column published in the Des Moines Register on Friday, Roberts pledged her support for Harris and praised her performance at the Democratic National Convention last month.
Roberts, a staunch Republican, said she was “baffled” when both presidential candidates were in or near their 80s. But when Biden dropped out, she “heard Harris articulate that she has always brought groups of diverse individuals and opinions together to solve problems. That’s a healthier and wiser way to lead,” she writes.
