The BBC is facing a billion-dollar lawsuit from Donald Trump. This is a controversial post.

US President Donald Trump wants compensation from the broadcaster despite the BBC’s apology. On Friday evening, according to the BBC, he told reporters aboard Air Force One: “We will probably sue them sometime next week for a sum of between a billion and five billion dollars. We have to do that.”

Trump said he would discuss this with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at the weekend. The background is a report from the BBC program Panorama, in which passages from a Trump speech were edited together. This gave the impression that Trump had directly called for violence at the Capitol in January 2021.

On Friday, the BBC apologized but said it would not pay any financial compensation. Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion in damages if the company did not issue a rebuttal, apologize and compensate him. They had set a deadline that expired on Friday.

The controversy led to the resignation of BBC director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness on Sunday.
