The Democrats are calling for legal steps against Trump’s changes to vote. His decree should suppress legal voices, argues the opposition.
In the United States, the opposition Democrats have sued President Donald Trump’s decree to tighten the rules for elections. In the lawsuit submitted to a federal court in Washington on Monday, the Democratic Party asks the court to block Trump’s ordinance, which, among other things, prohibits the states of counting incoming postal votes after the election day.
“The president does not have the right to dictate the rules of our elections,” says the lawsuit, which was submitted by the party headquarters of the Democrats, by the Democrats’ Minority Director in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, and by the head of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries.
Trump’s decree aims to “make radical changes to the way Americans register as a voter, hand over their vote and participate in our democracy,” complain the Democrats. According to the opposition, the new rules would “incapaculate lawful voters and none of it is legal”.
The decree signed by Trump a week ago, among other things, provides for the US states to impose increased control of the voter lists and to restrict postal voting. When registering for the voters lists, evidence of US citizenship such as a passport or driver’s license will be presented in the future. States that do not adhere to the guidelines must count on the cancellation of federal funds for the organization of the elections. The decree also provides for “suitable measures” against states that count in incoming ballots after the election day.
Trump had not accepted his defeat in the 2020 presidential election against Joe Biden, spread the false assertion of the election fraud and donated chaos, which on January 6, 2021 culminated in the violent storming of the Capitol by his followers. While the right -wing populist in 2020 in particular brought postal voting into discredits and represented as a means of voting fraud, he carried out a turnaround before the election in November 2024 and called on his followers to also use this type of election.
