Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is concerned about statements by US President Donald Trump about a possible withdrawal of the United States from NATO. “Of course such statements worry me,” the CDU politician told the newspapers of the Funke media group, according to a preliminary report. “NATO is of enormous importance for the security of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as for the security of all allies,” said Wadephul. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked the Army’s top officer, Gen. Randy George, to resign, the Pentagon said Thursday. A Pentagon official confirmed to The Washington Post that George has been asked to step down early from the post of Army chief of staff, which he has held since August 2023. According to the Washington Post, two other Army officers were removed from their positions: Gen. David Hodne, who led the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, and Maj. Gen. William Green, who led the Army’s chaplain corps.
According to a report in the New York Times, Hegseth fired the general, who was popular in the army, because he stood in front of four officers who Hegseth wanted to remove from a promotion list. Two of them were African-Americans and two others were women. Hegseth wants a promotion list that consists of white men, writes the Times, citing sources in the US military.
George’s firing is just the latest of more than a dozen firings of senior generals and admirals by Hegseth since he took office last year.
