A Swedish diplomat, which was suspected of espionage last week, was found dead from the custody after its release. “Unfortunately, we have to confirm that an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has died,” said the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday to the AFP news agency. No more information would be announced out of consideration for his family. Swedish media reported that the man found dead at night was the suspected diplomat.

The Swedish secret service had announced the arrest on Monday, but did not provide any details about the case or identity of the suspect. On Tuesday, the television station SVT reported that the arrested was a high -ranking diplomat. On Wednesday, the public prosecutor announced its release from the custody. However, the suspicion of espionage against the man was “not cleared”, the investigation would continue.

As SVT reported, the Swedish secret service examines whether the case is related to the resignation of the newly appointed national security consultant Tobias Thyberg.

Thyberg, who already as a Swedish ambassador to Ukraine and in Afghanistan had served on May 8, just a few hours after his appointment as a security consultant, after the Swedish government and various media were sent anonymously “sensitive” photos by the GrindR dating app. According to SVT, the detainee was not Thyberg.
