Armed confrontations in the West Bank leave people dead and injured. The Israeli army and Palestinian authorities present the events differently. The situation is explosive.
An armed incident in West Bank with at least six deaths escalating tensions between Israel and Palestinians. As a result, the Israeli army says it is preparing for a large-scale military operation in the occupied Palestinian territory. She also imposed a Curfew.
The announcement was preceded by discussions between the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu preceded by Defense Minister Israel Katz, Chief of General Staff Ejal Zamir and Chief of Intelligence David Zini. A joint statement from Netanyahu and Katz said the home of a Palestinian “terrorist” would be demolished. In villages that served as “terror centers,” there should be “striking measures,” such as confiscating weapons and revoking work permits. The army presence in the West Bank will be increased. In addition, the legalization of existing and new settler outposts should be accelerated.
The election campaign in Israel has begun before the parliamentary elections at the end of October. The issue of security plays a central role here.
Palestinians demand international help against settler violence
The situation in the occupied West Bank has deteriorated again since the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023 and the Gaza war that it triggered. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, around 1,100 Palestinians have since been killed in Israeli military operations, armed clashes and own attacks in the West Bank. But violence by radical Israeli settlers against Palestinians has also increased.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said the escalation of “settler terrorism” was a direct result of the protection, political support and complete impunity provided by the government and army.
The State Department called on the international community to take action against Israeli settler violence, such as sanctions against settlements and settler activists and a boycott of goods from the settlements.
Conflicting information about the events of the crime
The Israeli army and the Palestinian authorities’ accounts of the latest armed incident contradicted each other.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least five Palestinians were killed and three others were seriously injured. According to reports, armed Israeli settlers attacked the village of Tel near Nablus in the northern West Bank in the morning. Residents defended themselves. Soldiers who arrived then opened fire and killed several Palestinians. There were also settlers among the villagers who were injured by soldiers’ shots.
Israeli media reported that an Israeli citizen was also killed. An Israeli army spokeswoman said on X that there had been an attack on Israeli hikers near the Israeli outpost “Gilad Farm”. The attackers stole a security guard’s weapon and opened fire on Israelis. Rescue workers brought several injured people to a hospital. Palestinians on site described the army’s information about the crime as fictitious.
