NASA has warned of a giant asteroid that is rapidly approaching Earth. The giant asteroid, estimated to be larger than 213 meters in diameter, is expected to pass by Earth today.
According to NASA data, the celestial body last passed close to Earth in 2013 and will pass again in 2035.
The asteroid named “2024 ON” is larger than most asteroids that have passed close to Earth. For comparison, the asteroid is about the height of a 60-story building.
The high speed of the object, which is estimated to be moving at around 40,000 km/h, has raised concerns.
2024 ON poses no risk to Earth in its current orbit, but even a small deviation could have major consequences.
The asteroid’s sheer size makes it 99 percent larger than other near-Earth objects, but it won’t pass close enough to be seen without a telescope.
