Almost eight months after the election in Belgium, there is a new government in Germany’s western neighboring country. In another EU state, a coalition listed by rights is in charge.
Belgium is given a government led by the right party N-VA for the first time. The Royal Palace confirmed that King Philippe was informed about a coalition cleaning of the migration-critical Flemish nationalists of the N-VA with four other parties. Prime Minister of the New Middle Rights Government is to become the N-VA chairman Bart de Wever. The 54-year-old was so far mayor of the port city of Antwerp. He wrote after agreement on the X “Alea Iacta est” platform (“The cube has fallen”).
The aim of the new government is to reduce the large debt burden and the new debt of Belgium. Drastic reforms with severe cuts are expected into the welfare state. When the government can start remained unclear. The appointment for the swearing -in of the Prime Minister and the government members will be announced at a later date, the royal palace said.
The N-VA, which, among other things, is striving for more autonomy for the economic-strong country of Flanders, had become the strongest force in the election for a new Chamber of Deputies in June. The so-called Arizona coalition is now to be founded together with the Liberal Party MR from French-speaking Wallonia, the Christian Democrats from both parts of the country and the Flemish Social Democrats. The name comes about because the colors of the parties match the flag of the US state (yellow, orange, blue and red). The middle parties will continue to have a clear majority in the coalition. A radical right of right is therefore not to be expected.
The head of the Liberal Party MR from De Wallonie, Georges-Louis Bouchez, wrote after the agreement on X: “Tonight the future will be clearer. For Belgium. We are ready.” The party became the third strongest force behind the radical right Vlaam’s impact from Flanders in the election in June.
The N-VA had already received the most votes in the last parliamentary election in 2019, but had remained in the opposition. Only after around 16 months of negotiations was the so -called Vivaldi coalition of seven parties – the Greens, the Liberals and the Social Democrats from both parts of the country as well as the Christian Democrats from Flanders.
Government formations in Belgium are complicated and mostly lengthy. This is also due to the fact that most parties compete either in French -speaking Wallony or in Dutch -speaking Flanders. The king plays an intermediary role.
A total of a good eight million Belgians were called for election. There is an obligation to vote in Belgium. Non -voters who do not vote without a judicial reason are threatened with a punishment.
