Europe has to take security guarantees seriously, says Finnish President Alexander Stubb. This also means a military confrontation.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has drawn attention to the members of the “coalition of the willing” what the consequences of security guarantees that are given to Ukraine.
“Security guarantees are essentially a deterrent instrument. In order for this deterrent to be credible, it must be strong,” said Stubb of the British newspaper “The Guardian”. After a meeting in Paris last month, France’s President Emmanuel Macron had said that 26 nations had promised to be part of a “Reasturance Force” in Ukraine, with some of them assured their presence “ashore or in the air”.
But what are the consequences of these guarantees? This is clear for Stubb. If there are new Russian aggression after peace that is a prerequisite for security guarantees, the partners of Ukraine would also have to face a military confrontation. “By definition, this is the idea of security guarantees,” said Stubb.
Stubb, on the other hand, emphasized that guarantees were meaningless if they were not underlaid with real military strength. “Safety guarantees are essentially a deterrent, and this has to be credible. In order for it to be credible, it must be strong. That also means strategic communication: our security guarantees are not hot air, but real, and Russia knows that,” said Stubb.
However, the willingness to stronger reactions to Russian provocations is apparently growing. Union foreign expert Jürgen Hardt also brought Russian fighter jets into play on Saturday on Saturday. “The Kremlin needs a clear stop sign,” said the foreign policy spokesman for the Union faction to the editorial network Germany (RND). “Only a clear message to Russia that every military border violation is answered with military means to the shooting of Russian fighter jets about NATO, will have an effect,” said Hardt.
The Finnish President has been looking for closeness to Donald Trump in the past, among other things the two played Golf together. Stubb said he continues to be in contact with Trump regularly, “by phone and in other ways”, and he is expecting a bilateral meeting this week. The Finn also attended the meeting of European state and government heads with Trump in Washington.
