According to the media, another assassination attempt on former US President Trump may have been prevented in California. Police arrested an armed suspect.
Investigators may have thwarted a third assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. This is reported by several US media. Local police arrested an armed man before Trump’s campaign appearance in the Californian city of Coachella on Saturday.
“We probably prevented another assassination attempt,” local newspaper The Press Enterprise quoted Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco as saying on Sunday. The suspect was reportedly arrested about half a mile from the venue, according to local police. He was therefore stopped at a checkpoint in a black SUV. Here he presented several fake VIP and press passes.
The man was carrying a loaded shotgun, a handgun and a high-capacity magazine. According to Sheriff Bianco, the suspect is believed to be a member of a right-wing anti-government organization and planned to kill Trump.
However, Fox News, which is close to the Republicans, reported a little later that there was no danger to Trump. “The incident in no way affected the safety of the former president, including those attending the event,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The man was released on Saturday on $5,000 bail. The authorities have not yet provided any information about the man’s motives or possible connections to previous incidents.
It was only in September that a 58-year-old man was arrested after a suspected attack attempt and officially charged with the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
In mid-July, a 20-year-old man shot Trump at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. The ex-president suffered a minor injury to his right ear, one spectator was killed and two others were seriously injured. The assassin was shot dead by snipers.
