An attack hits the residence of Kurdish President Barzani in Iraq. The USA blames “deputies of the Iranian terrorist militias in Iraq” for the “terrorist attack”.

The residence of the president, Nechirvan Barsani, was attacked in the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq. Barzani told the Kurdish media portal Rudaw that the attack on his residence in the city of Duhok on Saturday represented “a dangerous escalation for the whole of Iraq.” At the same time, more than half a dozen drone attacks were registered in the Kurdistan Region, according to Rudaw.

So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Recently, both Iran and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq claimed attacks on the Kurdish region. The US blamed “deputies of the Iranian terrorist militias in Iraq” for this.

According to Rudaw, Barzani called on the Iraqi government to “seriously address” the problem of illegal armed groups. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani ordered the creation of a committee to investigate the incident.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Tommy Pigott said the “despicable terrorist attacks” were carried out by “Iranian terrorist militias’ proxies in Iraq.” “These actions by Iran and its proxies constitute a direct attack on the sovereignty, stability and unity of Iraq.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the incident. He spoke of an “unacceptable attack” and a “deeply worrying development” in Iran. Everything must be done to prevent Iraq from being drawn into the current escalation.

In mid-March, a French soldier stationed there was killed in the Kurdish region of Iraq. NATO had recently relocated the personnel of its Iraq mission to Europe due to the tense security situation.
