A US military helicopter crashes off the coast of Oman – President Trump says Iran is responsible. The USA carries out retaliatory strikes. Can the ceasefire stand this?

After shooting down a US military helicopter, the US said it carried out retaliatory strikes on targets in Iran. The attacks were carried out on the orders of President Donald Trump, the US military’s regional command responsible for the Middle East (Centcom) said on the X platform.

“The mission represents a proportionate response to the unjustified Iranian aggression,” the US military said in justifying its actions, referring to the shooting down of the helicopter off the Omani coast. The attacks, which the military characterized as “self-defense,” began at 11 p.m. German time.

Centcom initially did not provide any further information on the scope or specific goals. Iranian media reported, among other things, explosions in the city of Sirik on the Strait of Hormuz and on the island of Qeshm. There were also reports of impacts in the area of the large city of Bandar Abbas.

Trump speaks of a very powerful retaliatory strike

Trump told ABC News in a telephone interview that the response to the shoot-down would have to be “very strong, very powerful” – “and that’s exactly what it is.” He also said – probably with a view to the tough negotiations with Tehran in the struggle to end the war – that there was a “very good agreement”. This will probably last. The president did not provide any further details. Trump has recently repeatedly spread optimism that an agreement with Iran to end the war is within reach.

Officially, there has been a ceasefire in the Iran war for two months, but recently this seemed to be becoming more fragile day by day: the conflict had already escalated dangerously on Sunday with Iranian missile attacks on Israel. The Iranian armed forces fired ballistic missiles at night, including at an air base in northern Israel. The Israeli Air Force then carried out attacks on targets in Iran on Monday. Trump called on both countries for an “immediate” ceasefire. Both Iran and Israel then declared that they would cease their respective attacks. However, the situation remained tense.

According to Tehran, Iran began its attacks because of Israeli attacks against the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. However, Israel’s government has left little doubt that it will continue to take action against the Shiite militia in its northern neighbor.

No agreement in sight to end the war

On Tuesday, Trump announced retaliatory strikes against Iran for shooting down the Apache attack helicopter. The US must “inevitably” respond to this Iranian attack, he said on his Truth Social platform. The two crew members of the downed helicopter were uninjured and safe.

Trump had promised a quick victory when the Iran war began at the end of February, but efforts to end the war permanently have been stalling for weeks.
