Scientists, who detected two stars around the supermassive black hole called “Sagittarius A” located in the middle of the Milky Way, reported that they were surprised due to the closeness of the stars to the black hole.

Scientists considered it “an unusual situation” that stars so close to Sagittarius A could continue their existence despite the intense gravitational field of the supermassive black hole.

Stating that the stars are approximately 2.7 million years old, scientists also drew attention to the distance between these two stars orbiting each other.

Researchers stated that if the stars are farther away from each other, they may be torn apart due to the gravitational force of the black hole, and if they are closer, they may merge into a single star.

Researcher Florian Peissker from the University of Cologne in Germany stated that the two stars may eventually merge, although the time is not yet known.

The article of the research was published in the journal “Nature Communications”.
