One person died in a knife attack in New York. The investigation into the incident has begun.

In a knife attack in the heart of new York One person was killed and another injured on Monday. The second victim is being treated in hospital and is in stable condition, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters. According to him, the alleged perpetrator was shot by the police. The police initially ruled out a terrorist background.

US media had previously reported on the attack at the location, which is popular with tourists. Accordingly, the attacker, armed with two knives, stabbed two people before she was stopped by the police.

“At this point in the investigation, we have no reason to believe that this was an act of terrorism,” said New York Police Chief Jessica Tisch. According to her, the 49-year-old attacker was known to the police for incidents related to her mental health.

The police apparently tried to influence the perpetrator

According to Police Chief Tisch, the perpetrator first stabbed a 68-year-old man in the stomach. She then approached a 32-year-old woman, who she also stabbed. The woman later died from her serious injuries.

According to Tisch, the officers tried to talk to the attacker for four minutes. They repeatedly asked her to drop the knives, “but she refused.” “During the exchange, she said to the officers, ‘I’m not going to drop anything. I’d rather kill you both,'” the police chief added.

An eyewitness told local station PIX11 that the police tried to incapacitate the suspect with a Taser. She was hit by the Taser, but still ran towards the officers. According to the witness, the police then fired two shots at the woman.
