On her return journey from Ukraine, Denmark’s Prime Minister receives an inappropriate message. Then Mette Frederiksen finds clear words.
The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen defends herself against comments about her appearance. On Monday, the head of government reported on Instagram a message from a plastic surgeon who offered to “correct that little spot on your nose” – while she was returning from a trip to the Ukraine returned where she was exposed to air raid sirens.
“I’ve lost count of how many messages I’ve received about my appearance over the years,” Frederiksen wrote. “Especially that I have ugly teeth and thin hair. That I have an ugly ‘wart’ on my nose and well-intentioned advice to get some Botox.” The Prime Minister posted a screenshot of the plastic surgeon’s offer on Instagram, but without mentioning him by name.
Frederiksen is running for her third term
Frederiksen also posted her response: “Oh no. I’m happy with my body – I really don’t need a male plastic surgeon to have an opinion on it!”
The Social Democrat Frederiksen is Denmark’s second woman to head the government. She is currently in her third term, making her one of Europe’s longest-serving and most experienced leaders. She has led the EU and NATO member state since mid-2019.
On Instagram, Frederiksen stressed that she doesn’t interfere with other people’s looks, adding: “I’m completely happy with my body – the way it is when you’re a woman approaching 50.” She added: “If you would like to write to me (and you are welcome to), I hope you will use your time to talk about something more meaningful. Not my nose.”
