Wadephul in Kyiv: Ukraine will win

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is visiting Ukraine for the fourth time since taking office almost 16 months ago. Immediately after his arrival, he sent a clear message – also to Moscow.

Shortly before the 35th Independence Day of the Ukraine is Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul Kyiv arrived to give the country Germany’s continued support in the defensive fight against Russia to insure. “We are on Ukraine’s side. We support them. They will win this military conflict,” said the CDU politician after his arrival in Kiev on a special train.

He pointed out that Ukraine was attacked “hardest” by Russia in the summer months. Wadephul threw Moscow “indiscriminate murder of civilians” and targeted destruction of energy infrastructure. Russia wants to destroy the livelihoods of the people in Ukraine and thus break their will to persevere.

July and August were the deadliest for the Ukrainian civilian population in more than four years. “Never before has Russia fired more missiles at its neighboring country,” Wadephul said. “We see the suffering, we see how this country fought and we will continue to support this country.”

The Foreign Minister also assured Ukraine of further help in view of the winter, when increased attacks on the energy infrastructure are expected. No country invests as much in military and financial support for Ukraine as Germany. The Federal Government hopes that military pressure will persuade Ukraine to negotiate. Diplomatic efforts to end the war have recently stalled.

“It is becoming clear to more and more people in Russia that Ukraine has the staying power with international support and that a continuation of the war will only lead Russia further into economic ruin,” said the Foreign Minister. “The increasingly confusing propaganda and ever more totalitarian oppression at home is also a sign of the regime’s weakness.”

Wadephul is in the country for the fourth time since taking office 16 months ago. As usual, the visit was not publicly announced for security reasons. His program in Kyiv is also not announced. The focus will be on talks with the Ukrainian leadership.

35 years ago next Monday, Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union. Celebrations around the anniversary take place mainly in the capital Kiev.

It has been four and a half years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is little movement along the 1,200-kilometer-long front line, but both sides are increasing their air strikes on targets in the enemy’s hinterland. Ukrainian drone attacks cause fuel shortages in Russia. Warehouses of Russian mail order companies and arms factories are also repeatedly targeted.
