Iran threatens Ukraine after attack on cargo ship

After a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian freighter in the Caspian Sea that left one dead, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Ukraine threatened with a reaction. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “attacked an Iranian merchant ship and killed a sailor,” Araghchi wrote on X on Sunday. He condemned a “blatant violation of the UN Charter.”

On Saturday, Zelensky said that “very solid results” had been achieved through attacks in the Caspian Sea. The attacks were particularly directed against ships “used to transport military cargo involving the Iran were used, as well as on a “warship”.

He did not provide any further details. US media had already reported around a week ago that the USA was moving additional fighter and tanker aircraft to the region.

After a series of attacks spanning 13 nights in a row, the US military had reported no attacks against Iran in the past two nights. Waltz said that gives some room for diplomacy.

In the Strait of Hormuz According to Iranian media reports, an oil tanker exploded. The tanker deviated from a prescribed route and hit a sea mine, reported the news agencies Defapress and Tasnim, which are close to the military and the Revolutionary Guards. The tanker had previously switched off its radar system. No further information was provided.

The Strait of Hormuz plays a key role in global energy trade. Iran requires merchant ships to follow a designated passage and claims control of the strait.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say they have stopped six merchant ships from passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The Guards said they were asserting control over a 240,000 square kilometer area in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Tasnim agency, which is affiliated with them. This area corresponds to around two thirds of the German national territory.
