New system from EMRA: New application for electricity, water and natural gas begins

Preparations are being made for a new digital era in energy and infrastructure services in Türkiye. Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) is working on a comprehensive digital infrastructure project that will collect billing and consumption data for millions of subscribers in a single center. The system aims to monitor electricity, water and natural gas consumption information in an integrated manner.

According to the news in Türkiye newspaper; According to studies carried out by EMRA experts, existing electricity meters will be transformed into the center of a common digital infrastructure in the future, where water and natural gas consumption will also be integrated. With the completion of the necessary legislation and infrastructure works, the data of water and natural gas meters will be able to be read directly via smart electricity meters.

The National Smart Meter System (MASS), which will be established with this innovative step, aims to create a “national ecosystem” by bringing together different brands of meters, modems and communication software in a common protocol.

“SINGLE APPLICATION” CONVENIENCE FOR CITIZENS

Implementation of common infrastructure will provide great ease of use for citizens. Subscribers; They will be able to manage their electricity, water and natural gas consumption through a single application without the need to switch between different institutions and mobile applications.

The main advantages that the new system will offer to users will be:

-Instant monitoring of consumption amounts on a single screen.

-Easy comparison of past period invoices and usage data. Reducing operational costs by eliminating distribution companies’ dependence on a single technology.

COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURE WILL BE STRENGTHENED IN THE SMART METER PROJECT

During the installation phase of the system, geographical and technological restrictions, especially in rural areas, are also taken into account. Experts point out that there may be some communication difficulties in rural areas in the first phase of the project and state that a “hybrid” communication structure has been designed for these regions.

In this context, it is planned to use a combination of technologies that provide data transmission over power lines and systems operating over radio frequency. It was stated that R&D studies continue unabated in order to develop new generation communication methods and integrate the system uninterruptedly throughout the country.
