Chris Olah, co-founder of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, stated that decisions regarding artificial intelligence cannot be left only to the initiative of technology companies; He said religious leaders, governments and non-governmental organizations should take on a greater supervisory role in this process.
Speaking at the Vatican at the presentation of Pope Leo’s first historic encyclical on artificial intelligence, Olah said there was a “real possibility” that artificial intelligence would replace and displace human labor “on a very large scale”.
“If this happens, supporting people who are unemployed will become a moral imperative of historic proportions,” Olah said.
Olah added that companies such as Anthropic, which he co-founded, operate under very strong commercial, geopolitical and personal pressures that can sometimes conflict with the general interests of society.
