Are civil service families threatened with an end to support?

Free family insurance in statutory health insurance is about to end. Now there are voices calling for similar cuts among civil servants.
Free family insurance will no longer be available in statutory health insurance in many cases in the future. This is what the draft of the Statutory Health Insurance Contribution Stabilization Act provides.
What the federal government is planning
Free co-insurance for spouses and children has so far been a fundamental pillar of statutory health insurance. Previously, if the spouse had little or no income, they could be insured free of charge in statutory health insurance. That should change in the future: Instead, the main earner should pay a surcharge of 2.5 percent on their gross income for their partner’s insurance.
- With a gross monthly income of 3,000 euros, that would be 75 euros per month. Calculated over the year, the additional contribution is 900 euros.
- With a gross income of 6,000 euros per month, 150 euros would have to be paid monthly for the partner’s health insurance in the future. Calculated over the year, that would be 1,800 euros.
Anyone who will continue to be insured free of charge in the future
At the same time, the federal government is planning exceptions. Co-insurance should remain free of charge if one of the following conditions is met:
- At least one child under the age of seven lives in the household
- A child with a disability in need of care lives in the household
- The co-insured person cares for a person with at least care level 2
- The co-insured person is already a pensioner and has reached the statutory retirement age
This means that civil servants are insured
Civil servants are generally not covered by statutory health insurance, but are privately insured and receive financial support from their employer, the so-called allowance. The employer, i.e. the federal government or the states, covers a certain percentage of the medical costs – for the rest, civil servants take out special private health insurance, the residual cost insurance.
