Major police operation in San Diego after shots fired at an Islamic center. The officers found three dead people and two suspected perpetrators in their teens who probably took their own lives.
Three people were killed in an attack on a large Islamic center in San Diego. Two suspected attackers were found dead in a car in the parking lot, said Police Chief Scott Wahl. The authorities currently assume that the suspects, aged 17 and 18, committed suicide. The center includes a mosque and a school. Helicopter footage showed children being escorted out of the building.
According to the police, one of those killed is a security guard at the center, while the other two are employees, according to media reports. According to police, all three victims are adult men. The police initially did not provide any further information about her identity.
Witness heard around 30 shots
Because it was a religious institution, police are treating the attack as a hate crime for the time being, Wahl said. That’s why the Federal Police FBI was called in. According to current knowledge, no police officer fired his weapon.
The police responded with a massive operation to reports of a shooter at the center, which includes a school as well as the mosque. A witness told CBS News that he heard about 30 shots and then called the police.
The surrounding streets and an adjacent highway were blocked by dozens of police vehicles. The police set up a meeting point for family members.
US President Donald Trump reacted with dismay to the incident. It was a “horrible situation,” he said in Washington.
