Social media research in Türkiye: Support for restrictions on children exceeded 88 percent

NEWS SUMMARY: Areda Survey’s research with 2,400 people across Türkiye revealed that society supports stricter regulations on children’s social media use. According to the research, 88.4 percent of the participants think it is right to restrict access to social media platforms for children under the age of 15. This rate reaches 94.5 percent for women and 83.1 percent for men. The study also asked about the recommendation to log in to social media with authentication. While 62.4 percent of the participants stated that they supported this practice, 37.6 percent stated that they were against it. Support for identity verification increases with higher education levels. The support rate among participants with a bachelor’s degree or above was measured as 72.3 percent. The research was conducted using the CAWI method between 24-27 April 2026, with the participation of 2,400 people across Türkiye.

While children’s use of social media is increasingly discussed in Türkiye, a new research has revealed that society is in favor of stricter measures on this issue.

According to the research conducted by Areda Survey with the participation of 2,400 people across Türkiye, the majority of participants support restricting the access of children under the age of 15 to social media platforms.

In the research, participants were asked, “How do you feel about the idea of ​​restricting the access of children under the age of 15 to social media platforms?” The question was posed.

While 88.4 percent of the participants stated that they found this practice correct, 11.6 percent stated that they were against such a restriction.

Support rate is higher for women

According to the results of the research, support for social media restrictions for children was higher among women.

94.5 percent of female participants said that they thought it was right to limit the access of children under the age of 15 to social media platforms. For men, this rate was measured as 83.1 percent.

A striking picture emerged when looking at age groups. It was observed that the support rate for imposing social media limits on children among participants over the age of 35 increased to over 92 percent.

There is also support for authentication on social media

Another prominent topic in the research was the recommendation to log in to social media platforms with identity verification.

62.4 percent of participants stated that they support logging in to social media with authentication. The rate of those who said they were against this practice was 37.6 percent.

While 64.1 percent of men supported the identity verification application, this rate was recorded as 60.1 percent for women.

Support increases as education level increases

According to the research, support for identity verification on social media increases as the education level increases.

Identity verification support reached 72.3 percent among participants with a bachelor’s degree or above. This result showed that especially educated segments have a more positive approach to verifying user identity on social media.

How was the research done?

Areda Survey’s research was carried out with the participation of 2,400 people across Türkiye between 24-27 April 2026.

CAWI technique, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The study was conducted through Areda Survey’s Profile Based Digital Panel.

The results revealed that society has a high expectation of stronger supervision and age restrictions on children’s use of social media.
