CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann wants to significantly reduce the number of statutory health insurance companies in Germany. If Linnemann has his way, the number of cash registers should be reduced to ten to 20 by 2032. There are currently 93 health insurance companies.

If Linnemann’s proposal were implemented, the following funds would remain in place:

“For the system to be fair, everyone has to participate – including the statutory health insurance companies,” said Linnemann to “Bild”. By reducing the coffers, competition would become more efficient, administration would be leaner and costs would therefore be lower.

Warken also made it clear in an interview with “Bild” that the cash registers’ administrative expenses are currently not the biggest cost driver. Nevertheless, she was open to reducing the budget. The Health Finance Commission should also deal with this question in the future.
