Ukraine-based developer 4A Games officially introduced Metro 2039, the new installment of the Metro series. The production, developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, is planned to meet with players this year. However, the new game stands out not only with its technical development but also with the impact of the real-world conditions behind it.

While the developer team emphasizes that the new game will be the darkest and most claustrophobic experience in the Metro universe, it is stated that the story will focus on the Moscow metro again and draw the players into a single-person narrative woven with psychological tension.

The previous game of the series, Metro Exodus, changed the gameplay mechanics by going to larger and open areas of the surface. Metro 2039 returns to its roots and takes the story deep into the tunnels again. Creative director Andriy Shevchenko explains this comeback with the words “we are going back to the tunnels and addressing what makes Metro Metro.”

An exact release date for Metro 2039 has not been shared. However, the game is planned to be released in winter 2026. The first images reveal that there will be a significant leap forward compared to the previous game of the series, Metro Exodus, in terms of both atmosphere and graphic quality.
