In 2024, Kamala Harris clearly failed in the presidential election to Donald Trump. The former vice president of the USA is considering a new attempt.

Almost a year and a half after her defeat in the US presidential election, former US Vice President Kamala Harris has indicated that she will run again. At a civil rights organization event in New York on Friday, Harris said in response to a question: “I could, I could. I’m thinking about it!” It was Harris’ strongest indication yet that she could run again in the 2028 election.

As the then incumbent vice president, Democrat Harris clearly lost to Donald Trump in 2024. The party had named Harris as its candidate just a few weeks before the election after US President Joe Biden withdrew from the election campaign in July 2024 following a disastrous television duel against Trump.

Harris said at the event organized by an organization run by civil rights activist Al Sharpton that she was only “a heartbeat” away from the presidency at the time. “I’ve spent many hours in the Oval Office in the Situation Room. I know the job. And I know what it requires,” Harris continued.

The 61-year-old initially withdrew from the spotlight after her defeat. Harris published her memoirs last September and recently made several appearances in the southern US states. It was recently reported from circles close to her that Harris was still undecided, but was taking the first steps toward running for office.

Early polls suggest that Harris is the best known of the possible Democratic candidates. According to surveys, many voters also want new leadership for the Democratic Party after the defeat against Trump.

Several other potential Democratic candidates also appeared at the event hosted by Sharpton’s civil rights organization National Action Network, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. California Governor Gavin Newsom is also said to have ambitions to run for office. It is expected that the first candidacies will be announced after the midterm elections in Congress in November.
