Reporter: Explosions in Tehran

The Iranian capital Tehran has been rocked by explosions again. As an AFP reporter reported, around a dozen detonations were heard in the east of the city around 1 a.m. local time on Saturday (Friday 10:30 p.m. CET). During the day, several regions of the country were hit by renewed air strikes.

Witkoff: Talks with Iran this week

The US government’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, expects talks with Iran this week. “We think there will be meetings this week,” he said at a conference in the US state of Florida. It remained unclear in what context these discussions mentioned by Witkoff took place. He did not provide any information about this.

Witkoff reiterated that the Iranians have had a 15-point plan “for a long time.” “We expect an answer from them and that would clear everything up,” he said. Among other things, the question of uranium enrichment should be resolved. From Witkoff’s point of view, this would also clarify that Iran would have to give up its stocks of enriched uranium. Several US media outlets reported on the plan. Witkoff emphasized that the United States must not afford “a second North Korea in the Middle East” because that would “completely destabilize the region and the world.”

Houthis threaten to enter war

The Houthi rebels in Yemen are threatening military intervention in the war between the USA, Israel and Iran. This applies if new allies join the USA and Israel against Iran or if the Red Sea is used to attack Iran, a spokesman said in a televised speech.

A possible target would be the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Iranian-backed movement had already caused chaos in world trade with attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea during the Gaza War.

Impact on US base

According to a media report, several American soldiers were injured when an Iranian missile hit a US base in Saudi Arabia. The Prince Sultan Air Force Base was hit, reports the Wall Street Journal. There is currently no statement from the government in Washington.

Merz doubts regime change in Iran

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) sees little chance that the USA and Israel will achieve a change of government there with their attacks on Iran. “If that’s what they want, I don’t think they will achieve it,” said Merz on Friday at an event hosted by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In general, he was critical of Israel’s and the USA’s chances of success in the war. “I am not convinced that what Israel and the USA are currently doing will lead to success,” said Merz at the “FAZ Congress 2026”.
