Iran executed 19-year-old wrestling champion Saleh Mohammadi for his involvement in protests on Thursday, despite warnings from the US State Department and appeals from top Iranian-American wrestlers. Mohammadi was reportedly executed by public hanging – a move seen by Iranian-American human rights activists and dissidents as a “barbaric measure by the Iranian regime” to suppress the ongoing movement seeking his overthrow.

Nima Far, a human rights activist and Iranian martial artist who specializes in elite Iranian wrestling, told Fox News Digital: “His execution was a blatant political murder, part of the Islamic Republic’s pattern of targeting athletes to suppress dissent and terrorize society, as seen with Navid Afkari and others who were executed despite international outrage.”
