Sanctions for speed violations were redefined with the regulation that was accepted in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and published in the Official Gazette. With the change, a new era has begun in traffic speed inspections and penalty practices.
The penalty system, which was previously applied in percentages based on the rate of exceeding the speed limit, was abolished and a 9-stage system was introduced, determined according to the kilometer exceeded. In addition, speed rules were classified into two separate statuses: “inside residential areas” and “outside residential areas”.
Those who exceed the speed limit by 6-10 kilometers/hour within residential areas will be charged 2 thousand liras, those who exceed 11-15 kilometers/hour will be fined 4 thousand liras, those who exceed 16-20 kilometers/hour will be charged 6 thousand liras, those who exceed 21-25 kilometers/hour will be fined 8 thousand liras, those who exceed 26-35 kilometers/hour will be fined 12 thousand liras, those who exceed 36-45 kilometers/hour will be fined 15 thousand liras. Those who exceed 46-55 kilometers/hour will be given an administrative fine of 20 thousand liras, those who exceed 56-65 kilometers/hour will be fined 25 thousand liras, and those who exceed 66 kilometers/hour or more will be fined 30 thousand liras.
