The USA makes proposals to end the war in Ukraine. Merz, Macron and Starmer react.
Following the announcement of a new US proposal for a peace plan, Germany, France and Great Britain are urging them to be closely involved in efforts to end the war in Ukraine. After a telephone call between Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Federal Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said that all four had welcomed the US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
But they also agreed “that any agreement that affects the European states, the European Union or NATO requires the consent of the European partners or a consensus of the Allies,” it said in a written statement.
Merz, Macron and Starmer wanted to continue to pursue the goal of protecting “vital European and Ukrainian interests” in the long term. This includes, among other things, that the so-called contact line between the troops of both sides must be the starting point for an agreement. In addition, the Ukrainian armed forces must remain able to effectively defend Ukraine’s sovereignty.
With a 28-point peace plan, the US government of President Donald Trump wants to end the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine that has been going on for three and a half years. Several media outlets such as the US news portal “Axios” published the listing, the contents of which were also confirmed by government representatives from the USA and Ukraine. The plan contains numerous proposals that will be difficult for Kiev to accept – such as not joining NATO, a smaller army and permanent cessions of territory.
